Gus the T. rex Sells for a Huge $50.1 Million
A T. rex skeleton named Gus has been sold for a record-breaking $50.1 million at an auction in New York. This happened on July 14, 2026. The sale came after a very close bidding fight that lasted 10 minutes. The final price was much higher than the expected $20 to $30 million. It also broke the old record for a dinosaur fossil, which was $44.6 million for a Stegosaurus named Apex.
Gus was found by chance in 2021. A team of fossil hunters was finishing a dig on a cattle ranch in South Dakota. They decided to explore a new area on a whim. Within hours, they found a toe bone from the T. rex. Over the next three summers, they dug up the rest of the bones. Then, they spent three more years cleaning and putting the skeleton together.
The skeleton was named after the ranch owner, Gary Gus Licking, who passed away during the dig. Gus is one of the biggest and most complete T. rex fossils ever found. It stands 12.5 feet tall and is 38 feet long. It has 183 bones, which is about 61 percent of the full skeleton. By weight, it is up to 80 percent complete. Gus's real skull was so heavy that the auction house used a light copy on the skeleton. The real skull was shown in a separate glass case.
Gus has some very rare parts. It has 30 of its 32 belly ribs, which are called gastralia. These bones are usually not preserved in fossils. Gus also has healed breaks and bite marks from another T. rex. These marks show some of the hard times the dinosaur faced in life.
We do not know if scientists can study Gus. The buyer chose to stay unknown. This makes researchers unsure where the fossil will go. But there is hope. Some other buyers of famous fossils have lent them to museums. Scientists hope the new owner will do the same. Still, this sale has started a big debate. Researchers worry that very high prices will lead more fossils to be kept in private homes, where they cannot be studied or seen by the public.
