๐Ÿ“ Exercise Review

Comprehension Check

Completeness: complete ยท Accuracy: good

Main idea is accurate and concise, but the sentence needs editing. 'The advertisers use...' โ†’ Suggest: 'Advertisers use...'; 'Be aware.' โ†’ Suggest: 'We should be aware of these tricks.' Comprehension is strong.

Vocab Builder

Completeness: complete

All three words were used, and the meanings are mostly clear. Spelling needs attention: 'shinny' โ†’ 'shiny'; 'five-minnte' โ†’ 'five-minute.' The scarcity example is unfinished: 'for local' โ†’ 'for local residents.' 'Anchoring' as a news-anchor verb is acceptable, but 'Viewers watched him anchor...' sounds more natural.

Critical Thinking

Completeness: complete ยท Depth: deep

The evidence question is answered correctly with references to scarcity and emotional appeal, though 'the author provide' โ†’ 'the author provides.' The rude-email discussion shows genuine empathy and uses the article's advice. 'give me positive respond' โ†’ Suggest: 'give me a positive response.' The email response should be revised so it is clearly addressed to the rude sender rather than sounding like the original sender: 'Well, I admit it's really reckless to send me such a rude e-mail' โ†’ Suggest: 'It sounds like we've misunderstood each other. Could we talk face to face?'

See It Differently

Completeness: complete ยท Depth: deep

The social-proof answer is personal and relevant. 'Because adolescence is a time when we still don't have a clear view on who we are...' โ†’ Suggest: 'Because adolescence is a time when we don't yet have a clear sense of identity and we seek social recognition, it's easy to follow the crowd instead of buying rationally.' Also fix 'in-stood' โ†’ 'instead' and 'nationally' โ†’ 'rationally.' The shoe example is effective.

Quick Write

Completeness: complete ยท Depth: fair

The ethical strategy is honest but underdeveloped; it could explain how honesty builds long-term trust. 'I would present my products' advantages over others, emphasizing on how unique and convenient they are.' โ†’ Suggest: 'I would emphasize my products' genuine advantages and show customers why they are unique and convenient.' The sibling paragraph uses anchoring well, but needs grammar fixes: 'the eager to buy those product for you' โ†’ 'your eagerness to buy that product'; 'the result from' โ†’ 'the result of.' Overall, creative and relevant.

1. The advertisers use many psychological tricks to
prompt us to buy products. Be aware.
2. People often send rude emails due to various
factors, and we should stay calm, trying to resolve
conflict when receiving them.
3. They provide detailed examples to support its main
argument. Like in the "How advertisers make us spend
money", the author provide detailed tricks like "scarcity"
and "emotional appeal" to clearly demonstrate advertisers
spend billions studying our brain to make us buy their products.

Page 1 covers the comprehension, vocab, and part of the critical thinking exercises. The main idea answers are accurate: the student understood the core argument of both articles. However, the phrasing is telegraphic and article usage is off. 'The advertisers use...' โ†’ Suggest: 'Advertisers use...'; 'Be aware.' โ†’ Suggest: 'We should be aware of these tricks.' For the evidence question, the student correctly references scarcity and emotional appeal, but 'the author provide' needs agreement โ†’ 'the author provides.' The vocab sentences show word meaning but contain spelling errors: 'shinny' โ†’ 'shiny' and 'five-minnte' โ†’ 'five-minute.' The scarcity sentence is incomplete: 'for local' โ†’ 'for local residents.' Overall, content is solid, but the page needs editing for article use, sentence completeness, and spelling.

II. Rude Emails.
1. Of course it is. For one thing, being behind the
key board seems to make us safe from our e-mails
result, so we are braver, or more rude, to say
things that we wouldn't have said in person. For
another, the digital world seems fake and away from
the reality, where we don't need to take responsibility,
don't need to think twice about our words before
spit it out. So this boost our evil side to overtake
ourselves, to say some mean words.

2. Maybe it's the continuous pressure I felt in my
life. Maybe I've just been ditched by someone I can't
fight back, and felt miserable and negative. I would
send a rude e-mail to release my negative feelings. But
I was actually hoping that the recipient could respond in
a warm and rational way and give me positive respond.

3. I would write: Well, I admit it's really reckless
to send me such a rude e-mail. But I think we have
some misunderstanding. Is there something bothering you?
We can meet face to face and discuss them together.
Page 2 responds to the rude-email discussion prompts with empathy and awareness. Answer 1 makes a good point about keyboard courage, but it is hard to follow in places: 'safe from our e-mails result' โ†’ 'safe from the consequences of our emails'; 'before spit it out' โ†’ 'before spitting it out'; 'this boost our evil side' โ†’ 'this boosts our evil side.' Answer 2 shows a thoughtful attempt to imagine the sender's stress, though 'give me positive respond' โ†’ 'give me a positive response.' Answer 3 correctly suggests face-to-face conversation, but the opening line is confusing and slightly accusatory: 'Well, I admit it's really reckless to send me such a rude e-mail' โ†’ 'It sounds like we've misunderstood each other. Could we talk face to face?' Overall, the student understands the article's advice, but needs to proofread for syntax and word forms.

I. Advertisers
1. I think "social proof" is most effective on
teenagers. Because adolescence is a time when we
still don't have a clear view on who we are and
seek for social recognitions, therefore it's easy to follow
the trend or group in-stood of buying things nationally.
Like if all my classmates buy the same brand of shoe,
it would be absurd not to buy one myself.

2. I would present my products' advantages over
others, emphasizing on how unique and convenient they
are. But it won't work as well as tricks since
other competitors will do the same.

3. Firstly, as you can see, we already have products
that we need, and the latest viral product is not
that significant that it's gonna change our life style
or bring great convenience. Secondly, the eager to buy
those product for you is probably the result from
the "anchoring" trick. Advertisers will show you a high
price first then a sale price, encouraging you to purchase
because it seems to be a bargain rather than because
you need it. Be aware of that, boys and girls!
Page 3 is the strongest in content; the social-proof example is personal and convincing, and the sibling paragraph cleverly applies the anchoring technique. However, there are several spelling and collocation issues: 'in-stood' โ†’ 'instead'; 'nationally' โ†’ 'rationally'; 'seek for social recognitions' โ†’ 'seek social recognition'; 'emphasizing on' โ†’ 'emphasizing'; 'the eager to buy those product' โ†’ 'your eagerness to buy that product'; 'the result from' โ†’ 'the result of.' The 'Because...therefore' construction is redundant: 'Because adolescence is a time when we seek social recognition, it's easy to follow the crowd.' The ethical-advertiser answer is honest but a little short; it could explain how the strategy would build trust. Overall, strong ideas but language needs polishing.
